What was it about music and/or sound that drew you to it? (What influences and key gigs brought you to where you are today)

I grew up in a Haitian household where music was played every day. So I can say my family and my surroundings drew me to music.

What do you think are the biggest aspects that need to change within the structure of creative industries to enable people from different backgrounds to be represented and feel welcome?

Well, I believe it starts from the top. So once that type of conversation reaches the right rooms then we will see significant change, until then it continue the way it is now. 

What are your main challenges as a DJ? What is it about DJing, compared to, say, producing your own music, that makes it interesting for you?

I guess marketing because with social media you have to be highly consistent and engage your audience. So finding a balance between that and everyday life is a challenge. I enjoy having a good time and helping other people do it in the process. I love music and mixing I can do it for hours!

DJs that just press play on their laptops may have given technology a bad name, but without technology, there’d be no DJing in the first place. What’s your perspective on the relationship and the balance between technological advances, music, and the art of DJing? How have particular technologies changed your style of DJing? 

Once I started djing technology had already took a turn from CDs to using laptops and mixer boards. So I can say my style of djing has honestly been the same. But the art of djing has changed tremendously and I can’t wait to see what the future has next for our equipment.

Some people experience intense emotion when listening to music, others see colors or shapes. What is your own listening experience like and how does it influence your approach to music?

Growing up I listened to a lot of rap and hip hop music so purchasing speakers and having bass in your trunk was a must in my high school. So having loud music and songs with a lot of bass to shake the club or get everyone dancing influences my go-to songs when I’m mixing.

What advice would you give to other creatives just starting out?

Just to be patient and just know that as long as they keep moving forward they will achieve what they are trying to accomplish. Don’t overthink any idea whatever passion you have just started pursuing immediately. It doesn’t matter if you have one piece of art or equipment just start and figure out there rest on the way.

Who would you like to collaborate with and why?

Currently, I’m working as Skodi’s official DJ. She is a hot up-and-coming artist from South Florida who is about to take over! Right now I’m focused on building my status as well known DJ. But in the near future, I will be open to collaborating with whoever is down.

Tell me about your first DJ gigs. How did you approach them and how do you look back on them with hindsight?

When I first started out as a DJ I was 18 years old.  “DJ Syri” was also a two-person female team. We were two young girls that loved music and teamed up as DJ partners to attack this male-dominated industry. I’m thankful for the support of having a partner at the beginning of my journey it gave me the courage I have now to do it on my own. 

Have you opened for a well-known band, or played a big festival? Have you charted on the radio or had success on streaming music platforms? Been nominated for an award?

Last year I was able to DJ for my artist Skodi on the main stage at Rolling Loud Miami, New York, and California 2021. This year coming we will definitely be at Rolling Loud Miami 2022.

What are you currently up to with your music? Have you just gone into the studio? Released a single? Co-written a song with another artist?

No, right now I’m more focused on building myself as well known international DJ. Once I accomplish that I’ll be open to doing more projects when it comes to music.
